Where MAS lives now

Where MAS lives now

When I started Magazine Appreciation Society, it was with a simple belief: independent print deserved more care, more context, and more time.

That belief hasn’t changed.

What has changed is the structure around it.

For a long time, I tried to imagine MAS as something separate — its own identity, its own space, its own presence in the city. There was something appealing about that clarity. A dedicated room for magazines. A standalone home for curation.

But over time, I realised that independence and isolation are not the same thing.

And if MAS is to last — truly last — it needs foundations that are sustainable.

Running a small independent space alone carries weight. Rent. Overheads. Stock. Time. Energy.

Rather than carry that weight alone, MAS now lives physically inside Weekend at the Barras in Glasgow.

Weekend and MAS share the same values — a commitment to slowing down, to craft, to indie publishing, to camera film, and to the importance of real, physical space.

Bringing them together strengthens both.

Weekend provides the space — coffee-led, welcoming, and built around ritual. MAS brings the magazines.

One space. One community. A stronger foundation.

What Has Changed (And What Hasn’t)

The curation remains rigorous.
The selection criteria remain focused.
Independent titles are still chosen carefully and intentionally.

What has changed is the framework supporting them.

Where to Find Us
